Davos to host ‘Universal Peace Sanctuary'

KATHMANDU, Jan 17: The ‘Universal Peace Sanctuary’ is set to be inaugurated during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 21, for the cause of global peace.  

The Sanctuary, currently under construction in Lumbini, is being established with the sacred objectives of fostering dialogue to address complex global challenges and spreading the teachings of Lord Gautam Buddha worldwide, according to Buddhist religious leader Shyalpa Rinpoche.  

Rinpoche, who is preparing to travel to Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum—an event expected to attract over 100,000 business leaders from 70 countries—shared at a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday that the Sanctuary aims to guide people worldwide on the path of peace while contributing to Nepal's development.  

“More than 50 politicians, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, are expected to express their solidarity with this campaign in the coming days. Lumbini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will become a beacon of hope, spreading peace and prosperity globally,” Rinpoche said. “This initiative will pave the way for sustainable development and prosperity, not only for Nepalis but for humanity as a whole.”  

As part of the World Peace Campaign, a 44-meter-high, four-story World Peace Temple is being constructed in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, at an estimated cost of over five billion rupees.
