Resilience Restored: A 79-Year-Old Finds a Final Refuge at Kathmandu's Manavsewa Ashram

Most people look forward to family support and companionship in the latter half of their lives. But fate had a different story for 79-year-old Vipul Kumar of Rupandehi. After losing his wife and only son, he was finally forced to reach out to Manavsewa Ashram on his own in search of support. 

On June 4, 2026, he visited the Pashupati Area Development Fund holding a newspaper article. The news, which detailed the rescue and shelter of street-dependent people in collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Manavsewa Ashram, had given him a ray of hope. After receiving more information about the ashram from the fund, he sought refuge under their care. 

Prior to coming to the ashram, Vipul Kumar had been staying with an acquaintance in Tokha for a month. While he had no immediate problem with food and shelter, he worried deeply about where to go permanently and how to spend the rest of his life. 

His physical health had severely deteriorated. His knee bones are worn out, and he has been taking medication for high blood pressure for the past 14 years. He even sold his land to pay for his wife's treatment after she became paralyzed 14 years ago. Despite two years of tireless efforts and spending all his life savings, he could not save her. 

Following her passing, he left his remaining property in the name of his son. Tragically, seven years ago, his only son also died of a heart attack. His daughter-in-law currently lives at home with her two grandchildren, while his daughter is busy with her own family. 

"My family is big, and I didn't want to be a burden," says Vipul Kumar. "So, I came to Kathmandu looking for the last refuge in life." 

While his grandsons, aged 18 and 21, are focused on building their own futures, Vipul Kumar has decided to spend the rest of his twilight years in the ashram. 

"I have no one left," he concluded emotionally. "I will spend the rest of my life happily considering this ashram as my home." For Vipul Kumar, who has lived a life of pain, separation, and struggle, Manavsewa Ashram is no longer just a place of refuge—it is a true home for the latter half of his life.
